Adult Docents and Junior Docents (ages 12-18) are a huge part of the visitor experience at the Root House Museum. Volunteers share the history of the house, garden, Root family, and life in Marietta during the 1860s.

QUALIFICATIONS: Docents should be outgoing and confident speaking in front of an audience, enjoy interacting with the public, and have a working knowledge of local history (training is available).

RESPONSIBILITIES: Docents are responsible for looking out for the needs of museum visitors. Docents are also responsible for correctly answering questions or conveying questions to museum staff for answers. Docents are needed for special programs and events held at the museum. Period costuming is an option, but never a requirement.

TRAINING: To get started, docents are required to attend a minimum of seven hours of training. Docent training for general and special events is led by museum staff. General training is held two times a year. Given the amount of training required, docents must agree to serve for a minimum of one year.

TIME COMMITMENT: Each docent is required to volunteer two shifts per quarter during normal museum hours (Wednesday – Saturday, 11:00am – 4:00pm), or two scheduled Group/School Tours (usually 1-2 hours long).
